White flakes in the glass are often the heater dip tube or hardness, not a whole-house filter.

Hot vs cold first. Soft plastic chips point at the water heater. Chalky mineral flakes point at hardness. Do not buy a softener for a broken dip tube.

White bits floating in a glass. Specks in the coffee pot. Stuff caught in the aerator that is not sand. Ads sell sediment tanks. Half the time it is a crumbling plastic dip tube in the water heater. The other half is hardness dropping out of solution. One hot-cold test sorts the fork.

Do this first

  1. Fill one clear glass from a cold tap and one from a hot tap. Let both settle a minute. Which glass has the flakes?
  2. Look at a flake. Soft, bendy, bluish-white or gray plastic chip? That is usually the dip tube. Hard, chalky, crumbly white mineral? That is hardness scale.
  3. Hot only, or much worse on hot? Heater-side. Cold too, and it looks like chalk? Hardness or scale from the well side. Round translucent beads? Softener resin, not flakes.
  4. Crush a mineral flake between fingers. Soft chalk that powders is calcium scale. Grit that stays hard like sand is sediment, not this page.

What it probably is

Dip-tube failure: the plastic pipe that sends cold water to the bottom of the heater cracks and sheds chips into the hot line. Common on older plastic tubes. Flakes show up in hot taps, showers, and dishwashers. The fix is replace the dip tube (or the heater if the tank is shot). A filter does not glue the tube back together. If hot water also smells like rotten eggs, that can be the anode rod at the same time. Read the rotten-eggs page for the smell fork. Flakes alone are still a dip-tube or scale question first.

Hardness flakes: dissolved calcium and magnesium that precipitate as white scale when the water heats or sits. Same mineral story as crust on the shower glass. Read the white-crust page for spots and soap. Floating flakes mean the minerals are dropping out in the water itself. Softener still follows a hardness number, not a flake photo.

Anode debris is less common as white flakes. A failing anode can shed bits and often brings a sulfur smell on hot water. Smell plus hot-only odd bits leans heater internals. Plastic chips still mean dip tube. Do not buy a sulfur tank because you saw white bits in hot water.

Softener resin beads look round and translucent, not flaky. If beads are coming through fixtures, the softener has a broken distributor or a failed valve. Softener tech, not a new filter.

What not to buy

Orange or rusty bits are iron, not this page. Sand you can feel is sediment. Milky water that clears with no particles is often air.

If you actually need a box

Plastic dip-tube chips need no cart. Replace the dip tube or call a plumber. Hot-only sulfur smell with the flakes: see the anode path on the rotten-eggs page.
