Black stains, black specks, or dingy gray laundry are often manganese, not hardness.

Test manganese, iron, and pH. An oxidizing iron filter often treats both when the lab says so. A softener is the wrong only tool when manganese is the stain.

Black rings in the toilet. Brown-black streaks in the tub. Specks that look like pepper. White shirts that come out gray. That is not orange rust, and it is not scale.

Do this first

  1. Fill a glass of cold well water. Clear, already tinted, or already speckled?
  2. Let it sit an hour. Black or brown particles after sitting is often manganese (or iron) oxidizing in air.
  3. Look at the stain. Orange is iron. Black or brown-black leans manganese. They often travel together. White crust is hardness — different problem.

What it probably is

Manganese in groundwater, often with iron. Dissolved manganese can leave the tap clear and stain later. Oxidized manganese is already particles — black specks in a glass or on fixtures. Hardness is white crust. Do not treat black stains as scale.

An oxidizing iron filter (air injection and cousins) is the usual whole-house machine when the lab shows manganese and iron at levels that need it. One machine, both metals, when the chemistry fits. A softener can knock down a little dissolved manganese. It is the wrong only tool when manganese is the stain, when the water is already black, or when the numbers are high. You do not know which until you test manganese, iron, and pH.

What not to buy

Orange rust without the black is usually iron. Read the orange-stain page. They can be the same well. The test splits them.
