Blue-green stains on the sink are not iron. They are often copper pipes dissolving.

Aggressive, low-pH well water eats copper. Test pH and copper. A calcite neutralizer is a different machine than a softener.

Turquoise rings in the tub. Green crust on a faucet. Pinholes in copper line. Iron does not do that. Iron is orange.

Do this first

  1. Look at the stain. Orange or rust is iron. Blue, green, or turquoise is copper.
  2. Check the pipes you can see. Copper? Green on joints? Pinholes or damp spots on the line?
  3. Test pH and copper. Health department list or a certified lab. Do not guess the pH from the color of the porcelain.

What it probably is

Low-pH, aggressive well water dissolving copper plumbing. The stain is metal coming out of the pipes, not the aquifer dyeing the sink. A calcite (calcium carbonate) neutralizer raises pH by putting the water through crushed marble. That is not a water softener. A softener swaps hardness minerals. It does not stop acid water from eating copper.

You need numbers before anyone sells you a tank: pH and copper, and usually hardness and iron so you do not buy two wrong machines. There is no stain-color shortcut for “how acid.”

What not to buy

Orange rust is the iron page. White crust is hardness, not copper. Grit you can feel is sediment. If people got sick, or the well flooded or the cap is broken, that is not this page — that is health department territory.

If you actually need a box

You need pH and copper before a calcite tank. The Watersafe well water test kit includes both. It is not a substitute for a lab if pipes are pinholing badly, and it is not a softener.
